Starting in the historic Alsace city of Strasbourg, we sail through ancient waterways on a panoramic boat into picturesque districts, aglow with evening twilight. Itinerary
We meet our Tour Manager and the rest of our group at London St Pancras where our holiday begins. Aboard the Eurostar, we head to Paris and continue by rail to Strasbourg - the capital of the historical region of Alsace. The region is famous for its cuisine and world-renowned wines from vineyards along the 'Route des Vins', making it a delightful holiday destination. From here, our coach takes us to our barge ship, home for the next seven days.
After a welcome cocktail we relax onboard over dinner with drinks and our barge moors in Strasbourg for the evening. Following dinner, there is a chance to ride on a glass covered boat through the city at night (subject to availability). Sailing into historic canals, we pass through the picturesque district of Petite France lined with traditional half-timbered houses and colourful flower boxes. From the river, we also view the Tanners' Quarter, the covered bridges and the panoramic terrace on the Vauban Dam before cruising into Strasbourg's characterful German Quarter.

All of our time spent with Croisi Europe was brilliant - excellent food/drink, interesting trips with guides, the cleanliness throughout the barge was perfect and both the service and care provided by all CE personnel was exceptional. We cannot fault anything regarding our holiday on board the barge MS Jeanine. However, we were very disappointed with the Tour Manager you appointed to accompany us to the barge. We felt that Helene Faure was somewhat abrupt at the Meet and Greet session and she was rather impatient with those travellers who were less physically able. She did not accompany us to the barge as was her brief, but left us in the hands of taxi drivers at Strasbourg station who didn’t know us at all. Many of us were very confused at this point as the continuing journey by road was not explained to us - we didn’t know where we were being taken to when travelling for a considerable time (about an hour) along some strange motorway in three vehicles. Ms Faure appeared to be more concerned about her own holiday (which was obviously starting at Strasbourg) so just said ‘goodbye - I’ll see you at the end of your cruise to accompany you back to London’. The group fragmented when eventually dropped off in Strasbourg - some went on the boat journey (which had no bar on board so no drinking water available); others desperately wanted a drink and food after the long journey which began in London 9 hours earlier. AND there was no GRJ Tour Manager with us - NOT good enough!! My husband and I wandered around beautiful Strasbourg alone, hoping we would find the bus stop where the taxis left us. Fortunately we did but we had been left with no contact details whatsoever. A very disappointing and worrying start to the holiday.

This was a great holiday, the barge was comfortable, with the best staff you could want, nothing was too much trouble. the chef was excellent, coping with dietary requirements without a problem. There was a good balance between cruising and excursions, and the excursions were interesting. The only recommendation would be to insist on a cab between Gare du Nord and Est as if you are a slow walker or need a rest while walking the main group don't give you time once you have caught up with them!

It was a really good experience and full of interest except for two items. The first day was tiring due to a walking tour and scenic boat excursion following a long day's travel. The Tarte flambe evening in an Alsatian restaurant did not compare well with superior on-board meals.

This was an excellent holiday. With only 10 in our group we had a most relaxed time aboard MS Jeanine. The on board Croisi team were very accommodating and provided excellent service throughout the 6 night trip. The food was 5 star thanks to the excellent on board chef who treated us to a variety of meals including some local Alsacian cuisine. The accommodation was very good and given the very hot weather in late June, the air conditioning on board kept the barge very cool. Saverne was a lovely town for an overnight stop and to walk around. The same cannot be said for the other overnight moorings where there was very little to see or do. As regards GRJ we have traveled with them on multiple occasions and this is the most expensive per diem tour we have had. It was disappointing that rail travel to and from the barge is standard class whereas our previous holidays used first class rail. Additionally we booked a specific cabin, as had others, but this information was not passed onto the barge staff. Several other passengers had specific dietary requirements which the barge team were not made aware of pre-boarding which posed the chef with some challenges! Any passengers with mobility difficulties may find it difficult to board Jeanine or access the lower deck where the cabins are located. With limited seating space inside and outside a full complement of 22 passengers might be a squeeze on board. Since all cruising is by day the upper sun deck is not available due to limited heights of bridges along the canal. Would we go again, yes but on a different canal.
